Eric Jason Ream, aged fifty, went to be with the Lord on September 28th, 2024, at Seton Hospital in Kyle, Texas following a hard-fought battle with cancer. Eric was born on May 29th, 1974, in Springfield, IL to Terrence and Mona Ream. He graduated from Taylorville High School (1992), Baptist Bible College (1995) and from Dallas Theological Seminary (Th.M. in Bible Exposition and Missions, 2006), pursuing his calling in ministry and global missions.
While completing his college pastoral internship in West Texas (1995-1996), Eric met his future wife, Elisabeth, while she was briefly visiting there. Upon graduation, he traveled to the Fiji Islands in 1996 to spend that year teaching thirteen different nationalities at a Bible college and learning from his missionary hosts. It was at this time he heard a quote that said, “Ninety-eight percent of trained youth pastors live in the United States, where there are only two percent of the world’s youth.” This had a profound impact on Eric who spent the rest of his life challenging the body of Christ to change this and not simply live in your comfort zone. Eric was a shining light in a dark world, personally taking on his own challenge and believing that the mission field is wherever we are. Another quote that Eric loved to share is, “There are only two things we can do here on earth that we can’t do in Heaven—sin and bring others to Jesus.” Then he would ask, ‘Which one do you think we should be busy about doing?” Eric modeled being intentionally “busy” constantly sharing the love of Christ.
He married his wife Elisabeth Price on August 12th, 2000, sharing together the passion for teaching youth to walk with the Lord and pursuing missions. Eric had great joy teaching and discipling youth in Texas church ministries from 1999 to 2011 before moving to Haiti, where he and Elisabeth lived and served full time with their four children until 2020. Eric’s passion for every nation and tongue to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior was the heartbeat of his life and focus whether serving in his home country (US), host country (Haiti) or on mission travels to Mexico, Fiji, Nepal, Israel, Jordan, Honduras, Canada, Romania, Greece, Panama, Turkey, France, Switzerland, Belize, and the Dominican Republic. At the time of his death, Eric was serving as the Global Development Director for Heart of God International Ministries and as the Pastor of Missions at the Fellowship Church at Plum Creek in Kyle, Texas. Eric faithfully served his Lord and Savior until the very end of his life, even leading others to Christ while confined to a hospital bed. He loved God with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength. You could find Eric each morning spending time in God’s Word, devoting years of his life to learning the original languages of the Scriptures so he could better know what God intended in His Word and declare this Truth to make Him known. Eric also loved learning the languages of the countries where he ministered. He spoke Haitian Creole fluently and taught many pastors in Haiti to adequately divide the Word of Truth—the Bible. Eric truly loved just hanging out and doing life with friends, locals, and neighbors, sharing the love of Christ wherever he lived, worked, and played. He preferred to listen, learn about the person in front of him, and love them unconditionally, more than talk about himself. Many who found a friend in Eric did not know his level of education, career, or titles. Many did not know his personal sacrifices and sufferings. Eric’s entire ambition in life was to point others lovingly to Jesus and please God with his life. (2 Corinthians 5:9)
With a twinkle in his eye and always bearing a smile, Eric sought adventure, loved a challenge, and had a competitive spirit. He played many sports throughout his life and excelled at them all. He especially delighted in playing pickleball the last few years of his life and dearly loved his pickleball community. He loved playing games with friends and family—especially his kids. Raising his four children and having the privilege to show them how to know and love God was one of the greatest joys of his life. Eric was lovingly devoted to his family and was easy to love. Though he is greatly missed, the impact his life has made in this world will continue to point others to Jesus Christ—our Hope in life and death.
Eric is survived by his wife Elisabeth, sons Ethan and Evan, daughters Elita Marguerite and Esmée, his parents Terry and Mona Ream, Grandmother Virginia Ream, several uncles, aunts, nieces, and nephews. He was proceeded in death and now reunited with his brother Terrance Ream II, and grandparents Dale and Elizabeth Warren.
Eric’s favorite scripture says, “But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” (Acts 20:24). Eric faithfully finished his course with unwavering devotion in proclaiming the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, rose again, so that we might have the free gift of eternal life. Eric is now experiencing this gift of grace in the arms of his Savior he loved so very much.
Services to celebrate Eric’s life will be held at Cypress Creek Church in Wimberley, Texas on Saturday, October 5th, 2024, at 10:00 am. Thomason Funeral Home in San Marcos, Texas will host a viewing and family visitation on Friday, October 4th from 4:00-7:00 pm. Everyone is welcomed to come and celebrate what God has done in and through Eric, honoring the shining light and sweet gift of Eric’s life well lived. Eric loved wearing flip flops to walk his walk in every place and season of life. Eric would say, “Just come as you are!”, because that’s how he loved people. But you are also welcomed to come wearing flip flops as we celebrate the way Eric walked through his life loving God and others.
In lieu of flowers, Eric personally requested that donations be made to Heart of God International Ministries https://heartofgodinternational.org and Missions at Fellowship Church of Plum Creek. https://f-pc.org/global-missions/ as they seek to carry on Eric’s passionate purpose and legacy.
