Phillip James John "P.J." Sloan

Phillip James John “P.J” Sloan, 86, of Taylorville, IL, passed away very peacefully on Thursday, February 5, 2026, with his wife Audrey at his side.

Born December 23, 1939, Phil had a severe case of wanderlust from the start. As a toddler, he would frequently climb the back gate and go exploring, expeditions that usually ended with the police calling his mother and reporting,”Mrs. Sloan, we have your son here with us – again!” He stayed put long enough to graduate from Fenton High School in Bensenville, IL, in 1957, but within two weeks of graduation, he started basic training in the United States Marines. He served proudly for five years, attaining the rank of corporal and establishing a close and lifelong friendship with fellow Marine Jim Ivins. Phil’s time in the Marines instilled a fierce patriotism that he carried with him for the rest of his life.

After leaving the Marines, Phil indulged his wanderlust for many years, meandering wherever his fancy took him and working a wide variety of jobs all over the Midwest and West. Without question his favorite was the two years spent at Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood in Oregon where he learned to ski and yodel. (His skiing was definitely better than his yodeling.) Eventually he settled in the trades, working mostly as a carpenter and eventually safety coordinator on construction sites. Once retired, he   enjoyed the freedom to do pretty much as he pleased, tinkering in his garage and avidly following the ups and downs of the Bears and Cubs. Mostly downs, but the ups made it all worthwhile. He loved folk music, especially that of the Kingston Trio and Folk Legacy Trio, attending so many concerts (50 plus) that he was on a first name basis with their members. His sense of humor and quick wit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his wife, Audrey, he is survived by his daughter Kathleen Schabelski (Jay), grandson, Alan Schabelski, his sister Judy Hoffenkamp (Roger), many nieces and nephews and his cat, Ron, who became a faithful armchair companion when Phil’s declining health kept him at home. He was preceded in death by his brother, David (Donna); his parents, John and Fern; and his stepfather, Jack Snowberg.

Services will be held on Friday, February 20 at 10 am at Printy Funeral Home, 405 Cherry Street, Carthage. Illinois. In lieu of flowers, donation to the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, VA, or Fur Love in Taylorville, IL, appreciated.

On September 1, 1956, he married Elsie Mabel Hendricks, and she preceded him in death after many beautiful years together.

Carl worked on the assembly line for CAT for 33 years before happily retiring. Outside of work, he enjoyed woodworking, going shooting, and spending time outdoors. In his younger years, Carl could often be found hunting and fishing. Above all, Carl loved his family and the times they spent together meant the world to him. His grandchildren were his greatest pride and joy and brought a special light to his life.

The first of twelve children of Wayne and Kathryn (Miller) Murray, Dale was born on October 1, 1941, at home in Brownstown, Il.  Being first instilled the role of leader, protector, and provider from an early age, but characteristics that stuck with him his entire life.  After graduating from Pana High School, and with the encouragement and support of a mentor, Dale pursued a business degree at Sparks College in Shelbyville, where he met his wife and best friend, Barbara (Jones) Murray.  Together, they were blessed with 61years of marriage and six children: Tim (Tina) of Ladson, South Carolina, Eric (Penny Dunahee) of Girard, Illinois, Ian, Lisa (Denis) of Springfield, Illinois, Kristin (Kurt) of Springfield, Illinois, and Aaron (Raina) of Foristell, Missouri.

Dale is survived by five of their children, their spouses, 12 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, seven brothers, two sisters, numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.  Dale was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Barbara; his son: Ian Daniel Murray; great granddaughter: Gracelyn J. Banks; and two brothers: Tommy and Greg.

Although not a veteran, Dale was a huge supporter of the Military and Veterans.  His love for military history also inspired three of his sons to military service.  Dale encouraged and supported their military service.  A couple of his cherished memories included visiting the Pearl Harbor National Memorial and a cruise on the USS Minneapolis St. Paul (a Los Angeles-class submarine).

When not working, Dale found much joy in helping others.  He was heavily involved in the community as a Scout Leader, various fundraising positions for St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Taylorville, and was ever present for the Lion’s Club, as the President but more importantly for their Candy Day Fundraiser.  Dale was also a volunteer and social member of American Legion post 905 in Kincaid, for several years helping out with the semi-annual garlic sausage fundraiser and Bingo sessions.

His love for the outdoors was only superseded by his love for his family.  Dale loved walking in the woods, fishing, tent camping, and hunting.  When not outdoors, he could generally be found playing various card games, playing chess, and playing board games with family and friends.  Above all, Dale cherished the time he spent with his family.

Dale was a people person, never meeting a stranger.  He enjoyed conversation, sharing memories, and listening to others.
