Mary L. Smith

Mrs. Mary L. Smith, a vibrant 74-year-old from Decatur, IL, and formerly of Tovey, IL, made her remarkable journey into the next life at 3:45 P.M. on Saturday, February 1, 2025. Surrounded by loving family and friends in her daughter’s home, she left this world in peace, a testament to a life well-lived.

Born in the picturesque town of Carrollton, IL, on November 19, 1950, Mary was the cherished daughter of Roland H. and Norma L. (Reeves) Dean. On the sun-soaked day of June 19, 1971, she married the love of her life, Roger E. Smith, in Jacksonville, IL. Their bond flourished over an incredible 50 years of love, laughter, and bickering until Roger’s passing on May 15, 2022.

Mary’s journey was nothing short of inspiring. She graduated from Calhoun Community High School in Hardin, IL, before pursuing her passion for nursing at Capitol Area School of Practical Nursing in Springfield, IL.

With a heart as big as her dedication, she devoted many years to in-home health nursing for children with disabilities. The impact she made in their lives was immeasurable; she was a beloved figure to every child she cared for. A proud member of the Midland United Methodist Church in Kincaid, Mary carried faith and kindness in everything she did.

Her legacy lives on through her loving family: daughter Blaine D. Smith of Decatur, IL; sons James A. Smith of Moweaqua, IL, and Michael G. Smith of Taylorville, IL; and daughter-in-law Elizabeth McLeod-Smith of Assumption, IL. She adored her seven grandchildren and will forever be known as their “Punky”—Evan, Connor, Katie, Laela, Logan, Chandler, and Jordon—and they adored her back. Mary also leaves behind two caring sisters: Zella Mae (Mick) Blumenberg of San Antonio, TX, and Charlene Ann Opsal of St. Louis, MO, along with a treasured collection of nieces and nephews.

Though she was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Roland Edward Smith, in 1974, Mary's spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her. Her story is one of love, compassion, and an indomitable spirit that will forever inspire those she touched.

In loving memory of Mary, we invite you to a heartfelt celebration of her life on February 15th, from 5 to 10 PM, at The Hickory Point Banquet Facility, 727 Weaver Road in Forsyth, IL. Let’s come together to share stories, enjoy good food and drinks, and play cards in her honor. Your presence will mean a lot during this time of remembrance.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to sprinkle a little magic in Mary’s honor by donating to Macon County CASA or The Autism Program of Illinois. Let’s celebrate her love for children and keep the good vibes flowing!
