It's with heavy hearts we share that we lost our beloved husband and father Ronald W. Smith (born April 1, 1956) 68 yrs old of Stonington, Illinois on March 17th, 2025.
Ron grew up in Decatur on N 35th St the youngest of 4 siblings and attended the 2nd Church of God, graduating from Lakeview High School in 1974.
He soon joined the Navy in 1976 where he was in Japan, Australia, and was aboard the USS Francis Hammond in 1978 when they rescued several Vietnamese refugees. His crew was also aboard the USS America when they fought in the 1980 battle Operation Eagle Claw in Iran.
After his service to our country, Ron worked for Bodine Electric in Decatur with the electrician skills obtained in the Navy. He also worked for Warner Ishi in Shelbyville working on turbo chargers, as well as for the Christian County Sheriff's Office Reserve and Kincaid Police Department as a Police Officer.
In 1990, he was the 1st class of Correctional Officers to open Taylorville Correctional Center prison where he met several lifelong friends. He was part of their special tactical unit. He was also awarded a plaque for saving a fellow officer's life from choking. He was Vice President of local AFSCME Union and was very pro-union. He worked in Pontiac, Menard, Statesville, during his career and finally retired from Decatur Women's Prison in 2011 after 21 years of service.
Throughout his life some of his passions included hunting pheasants, morel mushrooms, was an avid 2nd amendment advocate, Patriot, gun owner and collector and loved gun shows and reloading his own bullets, shooting at the range and meticulously cleaning them.
Mechanically there was nothing that he couldn't fix!
His gardens were always plentiful and vivacious and allowed him to cook and can make many wonderful dishes including salsa and pasta sauces, gumbo, biscuits and gravy, even making deer jerky in which he would generously share with those he loved (granted they returned the jars!)
He would host and assist with many fish fries in the community and at his home.
You could find him in the middle of the winter (often barefoot) grilling or relaxing in his hot tub.
As soon as nice weather arrived, he would be shining up his motorcycle blaring the music and off he went!
He tried his hand at golf, rode his bicycle, and camped and fished.
Ron met Rhonda Potts from Chandlerville in 2009, and were wed on February 9, 2011, on Folly Beach in Charleston, South Carolina. They enjoyed 14 years of marriage where they often traveled in their RV with their dog Paulie to Florida, Biloxi Mississippi, and through Tennessee meeting several friends along the way.
He was in several bands including at church, Busted Flush (in his friend mom's basement), and Rural Route where he sang lead and played electric and acoustic guitar. His love of music spanned gospel, blues, jazz, classic rock and classic country.
His love of singing and playing music were essential therapies throughout his battle with Lewy Body Dementia with Parkinsonism.
Rhonda displayed the true definition of her vows of in sickness and health, till death do us part. Honoring her husband as his primary caregiver for almost 3 years.
Our wonderful Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his mom's prayers were answered 3 weeks before his passing, when he cried out that he wanted "A do-over with Jesus!"and rededicated his heart to Him.
His final breath on earth granted him his first eternal breath in heaven where he got to see his mom Helen Smith, father Arthur Smith, sister Ann Campbell, brother Art Smith, Uncle Red Riddle, Grandmother Frances Riddle, nieces and nephews at the pearly gates (and many more!).
Ron always stood up for what he believed in and never backed down from the fight with Lewy Body.
He left this world dancing, working out, singing, and still through his own trials, took the time to worry about his family caregivers and ask, "Are you ok?".
Lewy Body also brought people closer together in his family.
He even got to have his dream of riding in a 1956 Chevy, and meet his granddaughter Clover Evee Renee Smith.
He is survived by his loving wife Rhonda Smith of Stonington, daughter Ashley Tripp of Taylorville, son Nathan Smith of Maroa, sister Linda Riley (husband Monte) of Mt Zion, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
May his new heavenly body and mind dance, sing and play guitar for Jesus forever.
God Wins!
Memorials in Ron's memory can be made to the dementiasociety.org/donate or Dementia Society of America PO Box 600 Doylestown, PA 18901.
