Patrick Kennedy August 9, 1939 - June 29, 2025 Muncie, Indiana
Pat was born in Taylorville, IL, the son of Eugene and Alice Kennedy. He attended Taylorville High School participating in the orchestra and FFA. He attended the University of Illinois and Eastern Illinois University, then enlisted, and honorably served his country as a US Army Morse Code Intercept Operator (1961-1964). He was stationed in Panama during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Panamanian Flag Riots.
Pat returned to Taylorville where he worked with his family at Kennedy Supply Company and Kennedy Pony Farm. He was the superintendent of Kennedy Redi-Mix, an accomplished finish carpenter, and member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. Pat worked hard on his own businesses: Pat’s Harness Shop, Kennedy Harness Company, and Kenhurst Farm. He was a world-class harness maker, well-known and admired for his craftsmanship of custom fine harness and coaching harness, showcasing his artistic abilities, skill and meticulous attention to detail. He was an innovator of equine leather goods and known for his ability to customize, finish, and fit harness to perfection.
He and his wife Jay managed Kenhurst Farm in Muncie, IN where they bred, trained, shod and harnessed many champion hackney ponies and horses. The couple was honored with Hall of Fame awards by the Hoosier Horseman’s Assn. and the American Hackney Horse Society.
Pat also judged many shows including the World’s Championship Horse Show and The Royal Winter Fair. During his lifetime he was a legendary showman in the hackney futurities and showed many hackney pony world champions for Kennedy Pony Farm and his Kenhurst Farm customers.
During his life he served many equine organizations. He was a board member of the American Hackney Horse Society, Midwest Charity Horse Show Assn., and Hoosier Hackney Assn. He was a longtime member of many others including the United Professional Horsemen’s Assn., American Roadster Horse and Pony Assn., Mid-West Hackney Assn., American Morgan Horse Assn., American Shetland Pony Club, Illinois Horse and Pony Breeders and Exhibitors Assn., Land of Lincoln Purebred Livestock and Exhibitors Assn., American Saddlebred Horse Assn., St. Louis Driving Society, Old Stonington Hounds, and Wheeler Hobbs Arena.
Pat will be best remembered for his lifelong passion for horses of all breeds and disciplines, his skill as a harness maker, and his contributions to the equine community. He had a great sense of humor, was a voracious reader, and his ability to tell a good story was unmatched.
He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Jay; his children: Carole Kennedy (Mark Morton), Cathy (Stuart) Lowrey, David (Heidi) Kennedy, John (Michelle) Kennedy, and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his former wife Marilyn, and son Patrick Kevin.
