Ralph Roy "Steve" Stevens

Ralph Roy “Steve” Stevens, known to many as Rowdy, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2025, at 8:08 a.m. in the Pocatello, Idaho, home he shared with his daughter and son-in-law. He was surrounded by his family as he took his final breaths. Rowdy was born on April 14, 1940, in the Taylorville and Stonington area of Illinois to Velma Clara (Donaldson) Stephens and Oliver Floyd Stephens.

Although his given name was Ralph, he often joked that he refused to answer to it because he believed he had been named after the neighbor’s dog. To his friends and family, he was always Rowdy or Steve, a name that fit his humor, energy, and playful spirit.

Rowdy grew up on the family farm, where he helped care for animals and developed a lifelong love for land, machinery, and especially mowing. His childhood was full of memorable companions. He had a pet raccoon named Coonie, a crow named Blackie, and a German Shepherd and wolf mix named Chinook. He had an easy sense of humor, a mischievous streak, and a natural talent for storytelling. “I like to laugh. Laughing is good,” he often said, and he lived by it.

Rowdy lived with an adventurous spirit that carried through every decade of his life. He raced and rode motorcycles, explored mountains and back roads, and loved hiking, boating, and being surrounded by the great outdoors. His time on the John Muir Trail was especially meaningful to him, offering the peace, challenge, and beauty that matched his deep love for nature.

In 1960, Rowdy proudly joined the United States Army and served for three years as a Paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division. During his service in Germany, he traveled extensively throughout Europe. One of the experiences he recounted most often was serving as an escort and guide for a defected Russian officer. His time in the military remained one of the proudest chapters of his life.

After returning to the States, Rowdy used his military education benefits to pursue small commercial pilot training in California. Flying quickly became one of his greatest joys. He earned his commercial license and, for a season of his life, worked as both a machinist and a pilot, collecting many funny and sometimes harrowing stories from the air.

Alongside flying, Rowdy focused his education on mechanical engineering and spent more than three decades as a machinist. In 1993, he took his son-in-law, William “Billy” Schirmer, under his wing as an apprentice. What began as mentorship became one of the closest bonds of his life. During his final year, Billy devoted himself to Rowdy’s every need. In his final days, Rowdy said, “I love Billy more than anyone in the world, except maybe my ex-wife.” Everyone laughed and asked, “Which one?”

Rowdy spent much of his life in California before moving to Indiana in 1992. After retiring from machining, he became an over-the-road truck driver before eventually settling in Chino Valley, Arizona. There, he managed a beautiful 16-acre property with his German Shepherd Hank. Neighbors often remarked that his land looked like a golf course. Rowdy took great pride in caring for the property and frequently said, “No tumbleweeds here!”

In 2022, he moved to Holly Springs, Mississippi, to spend time with his daughters Stephanie and Susan. In October 2023, he moved to Pocatello, Idaho, with his dog Snickers to live with Juliana and William. His great-grandchildren became the joy of his final years. His great-granddaughter, Kelly, born on Christmas Eve 2024, was a bright light to him. There are few photos from his last months where she is not in his arms.

Rowdy is preceded in death by his parents, Velma and Oliver Stephens, and his brothers, Melvin and Robert “Bob” Stephens.

He is survived by his brother, Edward “Mike” Stevens, and his children: Stephanie Scimo, Susan and Neal Cox, Melissa and Dan Taylor, Juliana and William Schirmer. His grandchildren also survive him:  Stacia Reeser, Whittney Reeser Harris, Lexie Reeser Gregory, Lierin Schirmer, Kaylin and Chris Young, Jordan Schirmer, Logan Dickey and Mason Dickey. Six great-grandchildren survive him: Sawyer, Austin, Cordelia, Orion, William and Kelly.

Rowdy’s favorite sayings will remain part of the family’s memories forever:

“I like to laugh. Laughing is good.”

“You funny.”

“Lord willing and the creeks don’t rise.”

And of course, his lifelong joke about “being ugly,” which always brought a smile.

Above all, Rowdy will be remembered for his humor, stories, love of the outdoors, and care for his family. He lived a life filled with hard work, loyalty, and joy, and he leaves behind a legacy of love.

For those who knew and loved him, we invite you to raise a toast of “two fingers” of Southern Comfort, his whiskey of choice.

Daniel Ream Jr.

Daniel proudly served in the U.S. Army. He later worked as a machine operator.  Daniel was a true family man and was dedicated to caring for his wife, children, and grandchildren. He loved caring for his snakes and spending free time with his family and friends. He is missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife: Ruth Ream of Taylorville, IL; children: Alaina (Justin) Albert; Mariah (Gideon) Mead; Jessica Ream; Zachary Ream; Jenniffer Ream; Alexander Fanning; grandchildren: Beckett Albert; Willow Albert; Karyson Mead; Carter Mead; Jayson Mead; Madyn Ream; Daxyn Ream; Cannon Fanning; Irelee Fanning; Atticus Fanning; Liam Kinch; his mother: Caroline Ream; sister: Tricia (Shawn) Wells; as well as his nephew: Michael Wells.

Ruby Anne Kovack

Ruby Anne Kovack, 89, of Mattoon, Illinois passed away at 7:38 AM on Monday, November 24th, 2025, at the home of her daughter and caretaker, Karamel Belleau. We express our deepest gratitude to Karamel and her husband Bill for their tender loving care. She was the wife of Robert D. Kovack. He survives and cherishes her memory.

A funeral Mass in her honor will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 29, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 320 N. 21st Street, Mattoon, IL 61938. The visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Friday, November 28, 2025, at the Parish Center by the church. Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938 is in charge of services.

There will be a private family interment ceremony at Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville, Illinois.

Ruby Anne was born on October 7th, 1936, in Taylorville, Illinois to Henry and Jesse (Harmon) Moore. She was a 1955 graduate of Taylorville High School and worked as the executive secretary to both the Chairman and President of the First National Bank after high school. On August 17th, 1957, she married Robert (Bob) D. Kovack at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church.

She was a wonderful mother and is survived by and forever in the hearts of her children - Kim A. Craven (Donald) of Bloomington and Florida, Kent R. Kovack (Suzette) of Highlands Ranch, CO, Karamel Belleau (Bill) of Mattoon and her grandchildren, Joseph T. Craven (fiancée Hannah Brown) and Lucy A. Kovack of Highlands Ranch, CO; her sister, Donna Depolo; and many nieces and nephews. She gave her family many precious memories. We are filled with grief at her passing, but grateful for her life.

In 1967, the family moved to Mattoon. Ruby Anne was active in the community and was a member of Mattoon Golf & Country Club. She was a golfer and bridge player, enjoying playing in many bridge clubs along with her husband, Bob. She was a 60-year member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

From 1974 to 1984, she was the owner and operator of Kovack’s Flower Shop as a kiosk in the Mattoon Cross County Mall. She made many arrangements and bouquets for weddings and proms in addition to ready-made and custom floral items at her shop.

Ruby Anne creativity touched everything she did in her home. In addition to flower arranging, she painted, was a green thumb gardener, and hand-made Santa Claus figures. She had many collections, including both blue and orange glass, monarch butterflies, and miniatures which she displayed in printer’s drawer shelving. She was an avid garage sale shopper and loved finding a bargain. She was also a perpetual snacker and sweet-lover who happily shared her stash!

She traveled to Japan, Hong Kong, and Europe. She and Bob also took several cruises, including the Panama Canal. Ruby Anne and Bob spent more than 30 years of winters in West Palm Beach, Florida. They enjoyed many new friends and an active community there.

The family is grateful for the kindness and care in recent years of both her CNA, Kayla Clark and Dr. James Hildebrandt. We would also like to acknowledge Dr. Brad Racette who came into our lives more than 25 years ago and completely changed the trajectory and quality of Ruby Anne’s life with his knowledge and expertise in treating and caring for patients with severe Parkinson’s disease. With his help she was able to live a near symptom free life with Parkinson’s. If you have a friend or loved one who suffers from this disease, always get a second or third opinion, because it is possible for them to have a good quality of life.

Our wife and mother loved flowers; however, we request donations in her memory be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mattoon, the St. Vincent DePaul Society, or the Mattoon YMCA.

Please visit www.mitchell-jerdan.com or www.facebook.com/mitchelljerdanfuneralhome  to light a virtual candle in her honor or share a memory with the family.

Donald Francis Williams

Donald Francis Williams passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at Pana Health and Rehab.  He was born on January 17, 1935, in Benton, IL to Claude and Mabel Williams. It was during his early years in Benton that he became a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and his boyhood idol Stan Musial. His love of baseball never waned as he always enjoyed watching college and professional baseball.

He moved to Taylorville in Junior High School and graduated from Taylorville High School in 1953. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Beloit University where he was a two-sport athlete. He received his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Illinois.

After graduating from Beloit, he held high school teaching and leadership positions in Dubuque, Rockford, and Pekin prior to returning to Taylorville, the community that he grew even more connected to after retiring from his full-time role at THS.

A passionate and charismatic educator, Don would go the extra mile for any student that displayed an honest effort. His quick wit and positive energy made people feel welcome. His teaching style was influenced by his ability to use humor to disarm and connect as well as his ability to creatively communicate American History in an entertaining manner. Often, his history lessons incorporated the weekend exploits of students in his class much to the delight of those students that willingly shared the details of those exploits.

He was incredibly proud to serve students at THS from 1968 until his retirement in the late 1990s. Shortly after retirement, he was recruited to teach GED Classes at the Lincoln Land Community College Center in Taylorville where his passion for teaching was ignited again. It was a blessing for him to be in a flexible three-day, morning-only teaching role that allowed him to make an impact on many students’ lives while golfing as much as possible at Lakeshore Golf Course. While no one was ever able to confirm his actual handicap, many were able to confirm the presence of a bottle of Old Fitzgerald in the trunk of his vehicle for post-round beverages with great friends. He really enjoyed his time golfing and volunteering as a ranger at Lakeshore.

A lifelong learner with a desire to serve the community, he was approached by several city leaders to serve the Taylorville City Council as an alderman. He served on the city council for several terms and cherished the relationships with the mayor, fellow aldermen, and city employees.

Moved by watching his young grandchildren receive communion during a mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in 2013, he began attending 5:30pm Saturday mass regularly. His Saturday routine of arriving early to open the church, ushering with great friends, and going to the KC Hall after mass for obligatory post-mass beverages with more great people provided him with great joy. And he was both the willing recipient and enthusiastic giver of the vintage razzing he was known for throughout the years.

Beneath the humor and many one-liners (too many, actually) was a man who genuinely cared for people and cherished the many groups of friends within the community in which he lived for the last 57 years of his life. He never forgot his father’s coal mining roots and worked diligently on every task with attention to detail and great pride.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-parents; sister Carol; brothers Robert and Bill; his son Bob Williams.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years Jean Williams of Taylorville, IL; daughter Tari Williams, Springfield, IL; son John Williams and grandchildren Katie Williams and Jack Williams, Des Moines, IA; niece Kelley Williams-Davidson, Springfield, IL; nephew Jeff Quinn-Hartley, Cincinnati, OH, and nieces Sue Tasset, Cincinnati, OH and Beth Allen, Nashville, TN; and nephew Colonel Mike Pierce of Waterloo, IL.

To honor the legacy of the educators at THS and in the Academic Wing, he will be laid to rest in the Academic Wing Uniform: khaki slacks approved by Bob Stephenson, and a blue dress shirt (no tie, of course) approved by Eldonna & Dan Herzberger, Jim Podlinsek, Mike Cambruzzi, Mark Stephenson, Frank Farr, and Richard Daley. These were just a few of the many exceptional educators with whom he taught.

A funeral mass for Don will take place at noon on Friday, November 28, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. John Burnette officiating.  The visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until noon on Friday in the Church and burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic church or the Taylorville High School Sports Boosters.  McClure Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Taylorville is assisting the family with arrangements.

She was, from the start, resilient and unyielding, traits further strengthened by the childhood she shared with her sisters Erin, Laurie, and Kerry, and brother, Kevin in Taylorville, Illinois.

Following her graduation from Taylorville High School in 1977, Tara enlisted in the United States Army. She served her country honorably and proudly at home and abroad for thirty years, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant. Her career continued in the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency until her retirement in 2018.

She met and married Mark Darius ‘Doc’ Terry, her partner of 40 years while on assignment in South Korea. They had four children- son Mark Darius Terry Jr., and daughters Kaitlin Kathleen Thomas (née Terry), Marissa Marie Terry, and Emily Elizabeth Terry. Doc and Tara raised their family all over the United States and abroad, moving as required for their military service.

Tara loved the beach and traveling, but she just as much loved t.v. binge-sessions or a rowdy game of cards at a packed table. One of her greatest interests in life was to help the people she cared for, in whatever ways she could. She could uplift anyone with her wit and empathy. Her acts of generosity were immeasurable, as she put her energy, knowledge, and grit into enriching the lives of those around her. When she listened you did not just feel heard and seen, but you felt like a person deserving of love and acceptance. That was the feeling she gave you- like someone who deserved happiness, and she fought the world to get it for you. Her love for helping others was only eclipsed by her love of animals, especially unwanted strays, for which she prioritized vacancy in her home and heart.

She completed her life’s journey in Marietta, Georgia, in the surrounding embrace of her family, after a lifetime of fighting, loving, nurturing. Tara was preceded in death by her mother, her father, her sister Erin Poterucha (née Kenny), and her brother-in-law Brett Mense. She is survived by her brother Kevin Kenny and sister-in-law Jacqueline Kenny (née Smith), sister Laurie Mense (née Kenny), sister Kerry Loman (née Kenny) and brother-in-law Scott Loman, stepdaughter Alexandra Terry, grandson Tayven Lewis, granddaughter Sofia Lewis, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She goes now into the arms of her mother, father, sister Erin, and many other loved ones. She will be missed – and most of all loved – but endure indelibly in the hearts and memories of those whose lives she touched forever.

Tara’s legacy is carried by her Wolfpack: husband Doc, son Mark, daughter-in-law Becky, grandsons Jack and Theo, daughter Kaitlin, son-in-law Cory, granddaughter Eileen, and daughters Marissa and Emily.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you instead donate to causes that Tara was ardent about: animal welfare, child welfare, and breast cancer research.

Edward John Ovca

Edward Ovca Obituary

In journalism, there’s a common principle to leave no stone unturned. For Edward John Ovca, longtime owner and editor of the Free Press Progress, it was more than a good rule of thumb. It was a way of life for 95 remarkable years. After a brief illness, Edward passed away peacefully on November 7, 2025, in Springfield, IL., surrounded by his family.

Ed was born August 17, 1930, in Nokomis, IL, to John and Mary Ovca. From the start, he was drawn to the people and stories tucked inside his community. By age 11, he had found his place at the Free Press Progress - starting as a floor sweeper and working his way up to the press room.

Not long after graduating from Nokomis High School in 1947, Ed embarked on two new journeys: studying Offset Lithography at Rankin Trade School in St. Louis, MO, and marrying the love of his life, Eleanor Schneider, in 1949.

For 75 years, the couple was inseparable. They traveled extensively through Europe, including Italy, Germany, France, and Austria. They toured Egypt, Russia, and all of the United States. At home, they enjoyed listening to St. Louis Cardinals games on the radio, sharing sandwiches, and besting their children in family card games.

In 1953, Ed purchased the Free Press Progress in partnership with Irene Vandever. He was named Publisher and Editor of the paper, a position he held for the next 30 years until he sold the business and retired to spend more time with his family.

Throughout his career, he was invested in improving the community. Serving on the Nokomis Chamber of Commerce, City Council, and School Board was a way of giving back. He was a dedicated Rotarian with membership for over 40 years.

Outside of work, Ed was an avid fisherman. Known to many as “Captain Ed,” he was a member at Sportsman’s Lake for many years and held a Shelbyville Lake record for Muskie. His catch is proudly displayed in his den, much to Eleanor’s protest.

In his 95 years, Edward made an immeasurable impact on his community and those around him. He will be remembered for his civic involvement, patience, wisdom, and dedication to his family. Edward is survived by his wife of 75 years Eleanor (Schneider), children Edward Jr. (Patricia), Taylorville, Michael, Taylorville, Eric, Nokomis, and Kathy (Kevin) DeWerff, Bloomington, as well as his grandchildren Michael (Sarah) Ovca and Lauren (Ryan) Kinports, Marie (Dan) Neville, Joseph (Ashley) DeWerff, and John (Alexis) DeWerff, and great grandchild Rosie Marie Neville.

Funeral services for Edward will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church of Nokomis. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Burial will take place at Nokomis Cemetery. Stiehl Dawson Funeral Home of Nokomis is assisting the family. Memorials can be made to the Nokomis United Methodist Church or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
